Provide research, teaching, and technical assistance as a member of the departmental faculty.
Research emphasis is on computer-aided structural performance analysis and design of furniture frames; furniture durability performance evaluation tests; finite element modeling of furniture frame construction; strength and stiffness of upholstered furniture frame joints; durability of wood composites as upholstered furniture frame stock; nondestructive evaluation of performance of furniture structural components; and mechanical properties of wood and composite wood products.
Teaching duties include one course in strength design of furniture and two courses in mechanical properties of wood, and advanced wood mechanics. Advise 10 graduate students (5 Doctoral students and 5 Master’s students), 3 undergraduate students, and 1 Post-Doc.
Manage furniture quality assurance testing lab and mechanical testing lab daily activities. Supervise 3 full-time research associates. Provide technical assistance to forest products and furniture industries by plant visits and by teaching short courses and seminars.

Conducted stress and displacement analysis of furniture and other structures using finite element programs such ANSYS, MICROSAFE, GRAPE, and INERTIA. Conducted statistical analyses of experimental data using SAS, EXCEL and SPSS/PC+ programs. Made furniture drawings using VersaCAD and PC Image drawing software. Used Quick Basic, Visual Basic, and FORTRAN languages to write programs for research purposes.
Used universal testing machines to perform strength tests of wood joints with fasteners such as dowels, screws, nails, and bolts. Conducted furniture performance tests using test setup developed at Furniture Research Center, Purdue University.
Conducted flexural tests of metal shelving systems. Performed sand abrasion and chemical tests on metal library shelving to evaluate finish resistance. Conducted strain analysis of wood with electrical resistance strain gages and LVDTs. Performed standard bending, shearing, and compression tests, as well as other tests related to mechanical properties of wood-base structural material. Helped furniture companies implement ISO-9000, identify specific quality problems, and conduct quality control analysis.

Main responsibilities include Projection TV wooden cabinet mechanical design and development, engineering evaluation and testing, manufacturing quality issues, accessories development, and final instrument packaging design.
Led “Projection TV Picture Geometry - Cabinets” project team solved the company many-year unsolved cabinet geometry problem through understanding the problem, identifying key variables (main contributors), conducting process capability study, tracing root causes, proposing alternative solutions, taking corrective actions, and planning continuous process improvement. This accomplishment saves company millions of dollars.
Member of wood cabinet transition core team, proposed using 32 mm dowel-pin construction method to replace current PTV cabinet cleat-fixturing assembly method being used for 20 years, and pushed cabinet manufacturers to accept the philosophy of “Do Things Right At First Time” and finally implement 32 mm dowel-pin construction system.
Controlled and minimized Projection TV cabinet bowed top problem to meet product design specification and customer expectation, through working with cabinet manufacturers, analyzing the problem, conducting humidity chamber environment test and trial runs, and finally incorporating study results and solutions into cabinet initial design stage to minimize problems that could happen in production stage. This effort reduced the plant level lost on labor efficiency, overtime, rework, and quality issues, and also improved the line yield.
Assisted the business in becoming profitable by achieving individual cost reduction of minimum $100 k/year. Performed daily cabinet and packaging design work, and beat 95% of PTV development scheduled milestone requirement. Set Projection TV packaging design guidelines, standardized the design procedure, incorporated packaging testing results in CAD packaging, provided scientific base for EPS foam design, and reduced packaging evaluation lead time and cost.
Guided and helped co-op successfully accomplished to PTV engineering and quality related projects. Gave a technical presentation of wood technology related to PTV design group once a month. Actively participated Purdue ME students’ Design for Manufacturability class projects of redesign of RCA projection TV cabinet and optics. Certified Computer-Vision mechanical designer, I-DEAS CAD designer, FARO coordinate measuring machine specialist, ISO 9000-quality system internal auditor, and multiple project management facilitator.
